It’s been a busy summer – with lots of birthday parties and graduation parties to attend, but I did manage to squeeze in some work.  I’ve completed two ‘Condolences’ cards for the University of Calgary.  Thanks to Serey Sinn at the University of Calgary!  I’ll add these two new cards to my Etsy Shop so look out for them this week.

A lot is happening right now.  I’m putting together a catalogue of all my work.  And so far I have about fifteen different designs, and will continue to add to them.  I’ll also be working on the website redesign – when I can. Hopefully the new site will be more cohesive when it’s finished, and more content will be added. So check back often.  Ok, enjoy the rest of your week.  And stay cool!

If you happened to be in San Francisco and around the Sunset District this weekend, head over to Peapod Fabrics.  Yoshko, the shop owner, stocks her shop with a lot of really pretty fabrics.  It’s eye candy everywhere you look.  You will linger because it’s really, really, really hard to choose just one print.  This place is a gem.  But don’t take my word for it, check it out for yourself.

What came home with us.

I love strolling around European cities.  It’s one of my favorite things to do, and I always take my camera.  You just never know what you’re going to see or find.  Sometimes it’s good, sometimes bad, and sometimes just amazingness.  But one things for sure, it’s where I get a lot of my inspiration; the people, the food, the places and the architecture.  I remember the first time I took the double-decker bus tour in London.  All over the city, I was hit with this sense of history and tradition.  When you talk about antique, it means something entirely different over there then it does here.  The tour itself was quite macabre because most of London used to be one big place of hangings, torturing and beheadings; there was even a museum dedicated to instruments of torture.  Still you can’t deny the power of history and tradition.  It weighs on you like a ton of bricks when you experience it.  And it’s this experience that you get, this sense of history and tradition – lives past, that adds to any European excursions.

On one of those excursions/outings I came a cross this backyard?  It doesn’t fit the typical definition of a backyard, but it does have almost everything a yard has.  It has a patio dining set for four, a vegetable garden (ok, tomato plants), flowers, trees and a river running thru it!  Honestly, do we need McMansions with 5000sq/ft of backyard space when everything that matters is all here?  Ok, maybe we do, but I think this is pretty inventive and amazing.  And just outside thru the front door of this house are several beer gardens and restaurants, shops, and a playground – all just a few feet away.

As for me, well I’m feeling just a bit discombobulated, and glad to finally be home.  After arriving back in California from the NSS in New York (where there were torrential downpour the whole week), I hopped right into our car to drive to Ocean Shores, Washington.  Not completely over my Cold, we drove into another torrential downpour. But the drive thru the Pacific Northwest was beautiful, very scenic.   From concrete jungle to natural jungle, the contrast was strangely beautiful.  Then it got stranger.  At one point, I looked up from a nap, and saw a road sign that reads “Forks/Port Angeles”.  Hawwhat?  Are we in Vampire country?  With a sigh of relief, I can report that there were no sparkly Vampires or Werewolves sparring in Forks – on that particular day.  Who knows, maybe another day…

More from the NSS

Here are some more pictures from the NSS.  Sorry I meant to post these sooner.  There were a lot to see, but not overwhelming.  I’m posting pictures of the ones that I thought were different from the rest.  I also walked the International Contemporary Furniture Fair (ICFF), which took place at the same time.  And wished that I had more time there, but oh well, you take what you can get.

MARA MI produces a wide variety of paper products.  I really love their display!

THE LIFE IMAGINED was also one of my favorites.  I think it’s the simple display that really caught my eyes.  And the designer/owner Kristina was lovely.

I zipped thru the ICFF because I was running late for an appointment.  I wished that I had more time to go thru it because the show wrapped that same day.  But I did snap a few pictures as I was speed walking thru it.

This is a wallpaper that is meant to look like it’s printed on wood.  Love it!

Now, this wallpaper is really light and ethereal.  I wish that my picture did it justice.  But one can only do so much with an iPhone.

While Mother Nature displayed her power outside, inside the Jacob Javits Convention Center a whole lot of talents were displayed on the floor at The National Stationery Show.  It’s been a very inspiring couple of days in spite of the weather and “the worst allergy season ever”.  The show started on Sunday and will run thru to Wednesday.  It’s incredible to see what can be done with paper.  More posts to come later.  But in the mean time, hope these pictures inspire you.

Next week I’m off to New York for the National Stationery Show, where I’m planning to show my goods at next year.  So this is a research trip, and of course a bit of eating, drinking and shopping in NYC!  Will try to post as much as I can from the floor of the Javits Convention Center.   In the mean time here is a little something from my recent trip to Germany.

This scene is built entirely of Lego!   It’s a window display for one of my favorite toy stores in a city call Ulm, Germany – also my husband’s hometown and Einstein’s.  They sell vintage toys and really unique modern toys.  It’s a really small shop with a really big imagination.

Every year in July Ulm host the Schwörmontag – a city festival.  And this is when Nabada (river festival) takes place.  Nabada is one massive floating party down the Danube River (or Donau).  I haven’t been to it yet, but it looks like it’s crazy fun.

I had left my iphone behind so a very dear friend of mine, who flew in from London to meet up with us, snapped these pictures.  We were out for a stroll one evening after dinner, and passed by this window display.  Apart from being tech support extraordinaire, Jon is also a very talented photographer.  Check him out at www.jonhope.com.  Thanks Jon!

Hey guys, I hope everyone had a great Labor Day weekend.  I’ve been super busy with all the preparation for my daughter – she’s starting preschool, yikes. So I’ve been lagging with the blog posts.  They grow so fast. Tomorrow is the big day, and it’s the first time she’ll be away from mom.  I just hope that all will go smoothly, and by smoothly I mean, I hope I don’t break down in tears, haha.

So I’ve been thinking about colors.  I love colors.  The right color or color combinations can really make a statement with a design, in a room…. Unfortunately, not all colors make for good textile design, in particular bright neon colors.  Bright yellow, for example make for a less desirable results against white fabric.  You would need sun glasses to view them.  But of course there are exceptions.  Personally, I love yellow – here are some beautiful work in yellow that’s great with white.
